The 2007 calendar introduced another interest of mine, playing cards. I have been collecting playing card decks over the years. The unique designs and history of the suits have always fueled my imagination. The idea of “House of Cards” drawing started with a magazine photo of an old Victorian mansion. I thought all the ornamentation on the house would look interesting if it was based on the suits of cards. Having transformed the house I wanted to place it in an out of the ordinary composition. This house of cards became an intricate detailed model on a table being examined by a curious child. In the background is a window with mysterious diamond shaped decorations on the panes. Is this scene of wonder and imagination contained in a house of cards as well?
For the design of the business end of the calendar with the months and days of the year I wanted to carry through the playing card idea. The months(cards) are contained in sets of seasons with their respective symbols of snowflakes, flowers, etc. The color scheme reflects the colors found on a standard deck.
